Reach for Reading Activities and Resources for 3rd Grade

Many school districts have recently adopted a brand new English Language Arts curriculum created by National Geographic called “Reach for Reading”.  Once a new curriculum has been adopted, it can be a HUGE challenge sifting through all of the materials received, and it takes quite a while for teachers to sort through all of these materials.

Once the curriculum has been digested, teachers know what they need to help students learn in their classrooms. They need quality supplemental resources (printables and/ or Google Classroom resources) closely aligned with the passages in the textbooks to engage their students in their learning.

Students who are able to work independently from the teacher is a MUST because it allows for flexibility and freedom for the teacher to free-up her time to differentiate instruction; to scaffold learning for struggling learners and help extend and enrich learning for students who need to be challenged.

Teachers are now moving into more of a “Facilitator” role instead of a “Direct Instructor” role, and more classrooms are becoming spaces for “Student Facilitated Learning”. This allows teachers the flexibility of working with small groups of students to better meet the needs of all of the learners in our classrooms.

Our new Reach for Reading-aligned, 3rd grade resources help students learn and practice the grammar skills, vocabulary, spelling, and research aligned with the passages they’ve read. Our resources can be used with your Daily 5 rotations, Centers, Literacy Stations, homework, sub plans, whole class and more! To find them, go to TPT and find The Teacher Team Store, look to the left at the “My Product Listings, Custom Cateogories” and scroll down to find the Reach for Reading resources. This blog post has been written for 3rd grade materials, but we also are currently creating supplemental activities for 4th and 5th grade as well (next year we will be making 2nd grade materials!)

Included in our reasources are a wide variety of resources!. Some include Early Finishers Task Cards, practice for reading comprehension including CLOZE (fill-in-the-blank) worksheets, vocabulary cards and definitions for all kinds of student led vocabulary activities, spelling word cards with suggested activities, and grammar activities. Some of the resources contain research reports that align with the content being taught (these we also sell separately, but we include them for free in some of the resources), and leveled questions that can be used for writing or comprehension assessment.

Our text-dependent questions are leveled using Costa’s three levels of questions, which aligns with the AVID program. The questions are differentiated so you can meet the needs of all learners as you assess their understanding and application of the information read in their passages and text.

We’re really excited to work with a new group of teachers supporting the fantastic learning for ALL of our students.
