Well another Valentine’s Day has rolled around so what better time than now to dissect a heart? We started the Sheep Heart Dissection Lab today in my class. This lab is part of my Cardiovascular System Unit. Sheep hearts are used and the students really like doing this type of hands on lab activities. I also enjoy this unit and particularly this lab very much.

For me teaching is more fun when I can work with a partner teacher. Sharing the craziness that is 6th grade makes for a much more enjoyable year. My partner teacher is Meghan Lake. Meghan has been teaching for 11 years, and she also comes from a long line of teachers.

Well it’s been a little while but we’re back! Holidays seem to get out of control and getting swamped with things to do always happens not to mention it’s cold and flu season :(. With all that behind us now, what better way to start the new year than with a good old “Cow Eye Dissection”. Actually I’m sure there are much better ways to start the new year but we just finished our Nervous System Unit and now we are covering some special senses. This is a good, quick, one day lab that is great for learning the structures of the eye up close and personal. (Please note you need to have gone over eye anatomy and preview the lab ahead of time to make sure you can get finished in one class period.) Beware this can be considered a little gross for some people but in anatomy this is pretty cool.

You really can’t go wrong getting out some brains and looking at them. We’ve moved into the Nervous System in my classes and it’s time for the Sheep Brain Observation Lab Activity in my class. Unfortunately, due to budget concerns, we don’t have enough to dissect but this lab gives students a firsthand look at a real brain, and since it can be argued that most teenagers are lacking a normal brain this gives them an idea of what they’re missing. Science is a great subject to teach because the “hands on” opportunities are limitless. I mean a brain, on your desk, right in front of you??? Let’s see them try this in English class!
