Let’s Research St. Patrick’s Day!

Students LOVE St. Patrick’s Day…. but do they know much about this holiday? Whether I was teaching second grade or sixth, my students loved to do research on any topic. Whether it was going to the library and checking out books, or doing some web research, students crave learning new things.

St. Patrick’s Day Research Report

I always used some type of research report for students to do when they were done with their work. That’s how our St. Patrick’s Day research report was developed. There is so much vocabulary involved with this holiday, so learning more about it can be lots of fun!

St. Parick’s Day K-W-L

Students will first complete and “K-W-L” Chart first write about what they know about St. Patrick’s Day, what they want to know, and later they write about what they’ve learned from doing this fun research.

Describe Each Word and Illustrate It

Next, your students will research many of the common vocabulary words associated with St. Patrick’s Day, and then create a small illustration next to each word.

Writing Prompts – Essential Questions!

Once the students have researched, they will answer “Essential Questions” to really “Show What They Know” and apply their knowledge. Essential questions are non-text dependent, higher level thinking questions that really have students apply their new knowledge.

You can use this resource in so many ways in your classroom, and during the time leading up to St. Patrick’s Day, use it for ELA Centers, Daily 5 Rotations, and Writing or Vocabulary Stations.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day, everyone!
